About the Role

The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the Institute for Nonviolence Chicago, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This role serves as the core of the organization’s financial infrastructure, translating operational activity into reliable financial data to support leadership decision-making, audits, and funder reporting.

The Accounting Manager works closely with leadership, program staff, and external partners to ensure timely, accurate, and transparent financial reporting and management as the organization scales in increasing complexity, funding volume, and operational scope.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Core Accounting & Financial Operations
• Overseeing full cycle bookkeeping within the internal INVC team and external fiscal sponsor team to facilitate management of the general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close processes.
• Ensure accurate classification of revenues and expenses in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP).
• Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, stipends, payroll coordination, and cash management processes.
• Assist in the preparation and review of financial statements, including regular internal reports for leadership.
• Manage and develop junior accounting staff.
Grants & Restricted Funds Accounting
• Coordinate with Grants and Development to ensure grant revenues and expenses are properly recognized and reported, including on special capital projects.
• Prepare financial components of grant reports and audits as needed.
Compliance, Controls & Audit Support
• Maintain strong internal controls and documentation across accounting processes.
• Support annual financial audits, including preparation of schedules and coordination with auditors.
• Ensure compliance with applicable regulations, accounting standards, and internal financial policies.
• Identify opportunities to improve systems, workflows, and controls.
Systems & Process Improvement
• Maintain and optimize accounting systems and tools.
• Document procedures and ensure continuity and consistency.
• Support organization-wide financial literacy by working constructively with non-finance staff.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Reporting
• Support annual budgeting and reforecasting processes in collaboration with Finance leadership and department heads.
• Monitor budget-to-actual performance and flag variances, trends, and risks.
• Prepare financial reports and schedules required for funders, grants, and internal stakeholders.
• Support leadership with ad hoc financial analysis and scenario modeling when necessary.

Requirements

·       Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required or 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with specific nonprofit experience.

·       Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit and accounting principles.

·       Experience managing restricted funds and grant accounting.

·       Advanced proficiency in accounting software and Excel.

·       Experience supporting audits and funder reporting.

·       High attention to detail with strong organizational skills.

·       Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

Salary & Benefits

Compensation is commensurate with years of related experience, position requirements, and candidate qualifications. The average salary for the position is $65,000 and is commensurate with experience.
